RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
